- Hariphunchai period, 20th – 21st Buddhist era
- Characteristic :
- This Buddha head has round face with arched eyebrows. The lotus-petal shaped eyes are protruding and glancing downward, with pointing upward lateral canthus (end corner of the eyes). The face has narrow but high nose bridge, small mouth with thick lower lip and thin upper lip, round chin and segmented neck. The hair is big ringlet curl lining up with little arch above forehead. A part of ray round the Buddha’s head is missing which is assumed to be lotus bud. This is the unique characteristic of Lanna Art, derived from the Buddha images that were influenced by Indian Art from Pala Empire. It is assumed that the statue was made shortly after Lanna period which is during the period of Phaya Saenphu to Phaya Kue Na because it is distinctive from other Buddha statues made in the period of Tilokaraj monarch. This assumption could be related to Lanna religious archive which mentioned about Phaya Saenphu, prince of King Chaisongkram. Before his coronation, he had lived in Hariphunchai for around 2-3 years. He had made a bronze Buddha statue for Queen Chamadevi, the first ruler of Hariphunchai. This could be the same statue because of its representation of soft and feminine characteristic. It is valued as national antique because this piece is one of a few Buddha heads during late 19th B.E. to early 20th B.E. that still remains as well as its aesthetic value.
