- Era age :
- Hariphunchai period, 15th - 17th Buddhist era
- Characteristic :
- Assoc. Prof. Dr. Piriya Krairiksh identified in written record that the adorned Buddha head is Deva head. However, local people call it as hermit head because of its unique features which are arched mustache with long beard. There are decorated features of scored mustache and hairline, big open eyes, and dimple chin which give natural and realistic look. These features are similar to iconic sculptures in Sumerian Civilization in Sumer region of ancient Mesopotamia but they are distinctive from common Buddha images of Hariphunchai Art. Head decoration is a funnel shape on the rear side which is more similar to priest’s or hermit’s hair tuft than Deva. There is a headdress with high leave-shaped headdress lining up at the front side which is a contemporary style of adornment of God or Bodhisattva that was commonly found in Bagan, Jawa and Jumpa in 15th -17th B.E. Due to this contemporary characteristic, it is unidentifiable which arts came first. Notice that this hermit head was generally found at ancient temples built in the early period of Hariphunchai such as Wat Pratu Li, Wat Mahawan, Wat Pra Kong Ruesi and Wat Kulamak; these are the temples that have their histories related to formation of Hariphunchai kingdom by hermits. It is valued as a national antique because it is among a few clay sculptures remained which reflects the legend of Hariphunchai kingdom in relation to hermits. Additionally, its artistic history can be used in comparative study as a joint relationship with other artistic work.
