ชื่อเรือสองลำนี้มาจากคำภาษาสันสกฤต มีความหมายดังนี้ อสุรวายุภักษ์ แปลว่า “อสูรผู้มีลมเป็นอาหาร” อสุรปักษี แปลว่า “อสูรผู้เป็นนก” หัวเรือของเรือทั้งสองลำมีลักษณะคล้ายคลึงกัน คือมีร่างกายเป็นนก มีหัวหรือหน้าเป็นยักษ์

ชื่อเรือสองลำนี้มาจากคำภาษาสันสกฤต มีความหมายดังนี้ อสุรวายุภักษ์ แปลว่า “อสูรผู้มีลมเป็นอาหาร” อสุรปักษี แปลว่า “อสูรผู้เป็นนก” หัวเรือของเรือทั้งสองลำมีลักษณะคล้ายคลึงกัน คือมีร่างกายเป็นนก มีหัวหรือหน้าเป็นยักษ์ (ไทยเรามักเรียก อสูร ว่า ยักษ์) ลงรักปิดทองประดับกระจก รูปอสุรวายุภักษ์ ใส่เสื้อสีม่วง มือและเท้าเป็นสีคราม ส่วนรูปอสุรปักษี ใส่เสื้อด้านหน้าสีม่วง ด้านหลังสีเขียว มือและเท้าเป็นสีเขียว เรือทั้งสองลำนี้สร้างขึ้นครั้งแรกในรัชสมัยพระบาทสมเด็จพระพุทธยอดฟ้าจุฬาโลกมหาราช (พุทธศักราช 2325 - 2352) ในรัชสมัยพระบาทสมเด็จพระจอมเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัว รัชกาลที่ 4 (พุทธศักราช 2394 - 2411) เรืออสุรปักษี ใช้ชื่อว่า อสุรปักษีสมุทร หรือ อสุรปักษา บูรณะในพุทธศักราช 2508 ดำเนินการโดยความร่วมมือกัน เรือแต่ละลำมีความยาว 31 เมตร กว้าง 2.03 เมตร ลึกถึงท้องเรือ 62 เซนติเมตร มีกำลังพลประกอบด้วยฝีพาย 40 คน นายเรือ 1 คน นายท้าย 2 คน คนถือธงท้าย 1 คน พลสัญญาณ 1 คน คนกระทุ้งเส้า (ให้จังหวะ) 2 คน และคนตีกลองชนะ 10 คน |
The names of these two barges that are pronounced asura-wayu-phak and asura-paksi, are equivalent to the Sanskrit compound word asura-vāyu-bhakṣa and asura-pakṣī, literally mean a demon who consumes the wind and a bird-like demon, respectively. The figurehead of each barge features a faced bird demon, carved and gilded with mirrored glass decoration. The Asura Wayuphak figure has a dark blue body with a purple coat. The Asura Paksi figure has a green body with a coat with a purple front and green back. The two barges was originally built in the reign of King Rama I (reigned 1782 – 1809). In the reign of King Rama IV (1851 – 1868) the second barge was called Asura Paksi Samut meaning a sea - bird - like demon. They were repaired by the Fine Arts Department and the Royal Thai Navy in 1965. The length of each barge is 30 meters and the width at the beam 2.03 metres. The depth of the hull is 62 centimeters. It is manned by thirty oarsmen with two steersmen, one officer, one standard bearer, one signalman, two station markers and ten drummers. |
